Most agencies sell AI search as a new package on top of old SEO habits. Buyers need tighter vendor scrutiny, stronger governance, and measurement built around citations and qualified traffic.
Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews the questions they used to type into a search box. The answer they get names a handful of vendors and cites a handful of sources. This collection covers how to become one of them: what answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) change about search, how to structure pages so models can quote them, and how to measure whether any of it is producing pipeline.

Common questions
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization is the work of getting your brand selected, named and cited when an AI assistant or AI search feature answers a question in your category. It combines on-page structure that models can quote, off-site mentions that models trust, and measurement of how often you appear in the answers your buyers actually see.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO earns a ranked link that a searcher may click. AEO earns a mention or citation inside a generated answer, often with no click at all. Most technical SEO still matters because many answer engines retrieve from search indexes. What changes is how pages are written (short, self-contained answers), how much off-site reputation counts, and what you measure: your share of citations across a fixed set of buyer questions.
Is GEO the same thing as AEO?
The terms overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably. GEO is usually used for generative search products such as Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, and AEO for assistants that answer directly, such as ChatGPT. The work is largely the same.
How do you measure AI visibility?
Build a fixed list of the questions your buyers ask, run them through the main engines on a regular schedule, and record whether your brand is named, whether you are cited as a source, and which competitors appear instead. Tracking that share over time is the baseline. The AI visibility audit walks through the process.
Does llms.txt improve AI visibility?
Probably not by much today. It is a proposed convention, and support from the major answer engines is limited and unconfirmed. It is cheap to add, so treat it as housekeeping and put the real effort into content structure and off-site mentions.
AI Answer Engines: How They Power Search in 2026
Google AI Mode accounted for 54.3% of publishing citations in 2026, versus 19.4% for ChatGPT and 13.1% for Perplexity. That concentration matters because ai answer…
AEO Strategy That Wins AI Answers and Pipeline
AI summaries reduce the value of traditional rankings because buyers can receive a complete recommendation without clicking. This article shows how growth-stage B2B teams can measure citation visibility by query cluster, adapt to model-specific source behavior and connect answer presence to pipeline influence.
AI Visibility Audit: A Practical Playbook for B2B
An AI visibility audit is useful only when it separates retrieval, citation, and recommendation failures. The output should give technical, content, communications, and competitive intelligence owners a dated fix list tied to buyer questions.
